Are we truly in control of our own lives? This is a question I have pondered many times. The concept of control carries with it many implications and responsibilities. If we say we are in complete control of our own lives then we become liable or subjected to all outcomes good or bad. Yet the truth is, we can not control everything. We are unable to stop a hurricane, a stock market crash, acquiring cancer, or the reaction of a loved one for example. We could however be kind to others, respond in love, or work diligently to complete a project. Some of us just do what we feel like at the time or cast all cares to the wind.
The real question remains: Is God in control of everything? I believe ultimately He is. The Bible teaches us that we still have free will. Adam and Eve chose to bite the apple and look at the mess that created! So the truth is, there are consequences to our decisions and actions. The Lord is omnipresent ( everywhere) Jeremiah 23:24. The Lord is omniscient ( knows everything) Proverbs 15:3. The Lord is omnipotent ( all powerful) Genesis 1:1, Psalm 135:6.
So is God in control of every decision? No, we can still make poor choices, we have free will. We can be tempted, we can sin, or we can choose to love others and God. So is God in control of every outcome? I believe He is ultimately. He allows things to happen on His schedule with His unlimited foreknowledge. Even Satan had to request the Lord’s permission to hurt and test Job.
I am comforted by the Lord’s promise in Romans 8, “ that in all things God works for the good “, this is why I love Him. I pray you do also!
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)
